Sleep With Your Head Towards South

The direction your head faces while sleeping has a strong effect on your physical and mental well-being. Head placement refers to the direction the top of your head points when lying down.

One should avoid sleeping with his head to the north or west. We all know that our planet has a magnetic pole stretched from north to south with the positive pole at the north and the negative pole at the south. Now, health scientists tell us that we too have a similar magnetic stretch with the positive pole at the head and the negative one at the feet.

It is common knowledge that like poles repel and unlike poles attract not only scientific but also in social spheres. When we lay our heads on the north side, the two positive sides repel each other and there is a struggle between the two.

Since the earth has a greater magnetic force, we are always the losers, and rise in the morning with headache or heaviness.

Additional Details

But when we lay our heads in the southern direction, there is mutual attraction and we wake up fit, fresh and free, unless afflicted by some illness.

We also know that our planet revolves itself from west to east, and sun's magnetic field enters earth from east side. This magnetic force enters our head if we lie with head on the east and exits through feet, promoting cool heads and warm feet as per the laws of magnetism and electricity. When the head is laid towards the west, cool feet and hot head -- result -- an unpleasant start for morning.

Now we may realize why the ancient people said, that our intellect improves by east facing head or house, and life lengthens with the head facing south.

North brings disease and west dulls the brain. They gave us a few more healing hints for a healthy sleep. Never lie on one side for long. Keep changing.

Conclusion:

  • Head to East: Benefits: Auspicious
  • Always make sure you put your head in the East direction as much as possible.Head to South: Benefits: Auspicious
  • The best position for sleeping is with the top of your head pointing to the south and feet pointing north.Head to North or West: Results: Dangerous.
  • Never sleep with the top of your head pointing to the north and feet pointing to the south. Brings terrible dreams and disturbed sleep. You will feel miserable. Irritability, frustration and emotional instability will develop. It sucks your positive vibrations while you sleep. You will lose 50% of your willpower and your soul power will not increase while you sleep. Your physical and mental health will suffer.

The only problem with this logic is that if you were to draw a picture of the globe on paper and put an imaginary bar-magnet in the middle, the negative end would actually be on what we consider to be the north, or top side, and the positive end would be on the bottom. Think about it this way, the north arrow on a compass is positively charged and it points towards... the north. If opposite charges attract, then you can clearly see that we have been fooled by some simple logic all this time and that North is actually south and vice versa.

P.s. I learned this in a university physics 3 class, so you can trust its authenticity.

Anonymous said...

Casey...what you said is right, BAR MAGNET points to North , in the sence that there is an attraction / understanding between North Pole of earth and the North of Bar Magnet. So, like the same, if you place your head NORTH, there would be perfect sync between NORTH pole and Head....

what do you say...?

Vipul Pathak said...

@ Casey:

Good to see your interest. Thanks for coming back to my blog and for posting your comment once again. My reply was due since long. Sorry for this delay.

Casey, you are still wrong. WE SHOULD KEEP OUR HEAD(POSITIVE) TOWARDS SOUTH(NEGATIVE) OF EARTH.

Actually the mark 'North' on a Compass doesn't show the north of 'Compass Magnet' but the north of earth. The end where North is marked is actually south of the Compass Magnet. So,the attraction is still between the opposites and not between North Pole of earth and the North of Bar Magnet.

Earth's North pole: POSITIVE
Earth's South pole: NEGATIVE

Compass North Marked side: NEGATIVE
(which is actually the South pole of compass magnet
Compass South Marked side:POSITIVE
(which is actually the North pole of compass magnet)

Human Head-North pole: POSITIVE
Human Body South pole: NEGATIVE

I hope now the doubts are clear.

@Anonymous

You should avoid to sleep with head pointing west and feet pointing East.

Anonymous said...

I liked the explanation!! great! it has its sense, I hope so, since I have just moved and my bed now is facing south!! with no available chances ...

Vipul Pathak said...

@Anonymous

Sometimes I sleep with head on the opposite side of the bed's face. I think you can also do that. Who is going to check whether you are sleeping with head on the bed's face side or not? I hope you understood what I am trying to suggest.

Be happy because your bed is parallel to earth's magnetic field i.e. north-south direction.

Awaiting for your reply

VP, The exact north of my bedroom is the corner of two walls. The two walls are the only sides I can setup my bed. So, we have a choice between N-W or N-E. The other sides , S,S-E and S-W, W have either doors to exit, bathroom or are corners. So, where do you suggest we put our bed? -Manav

My granny always used to say not to sleep with head towards north or west. Surely she didn't know the technological reason behind it. She knew it just because her parents also used to tell her that. So, there has to be a strong reason why this belief would have started. Some things are better be followed as per our parents and ancestor guidelines though they might not have scientific evidence for it.

Vipul Pathak said...

Yes, let me take this opportunity to tell you two more such practices.

1.It was advised by Hindu ancestors that while eating we should sit cross-legged.
Reason: Cross-legged sitting will press our stomach inside. No matter how much we eat we will not feel overeaten as the moment we get up, the intestine will come to normal position leaving some space in the stomach.

2. Before starting lunch or dinner, there was a practice take God's name, draw a line of water all around the plate and keep first bite aside.
Reason:
a) God's Name: Nothing scientific about it. Just to thank Him for His gift of nature.

b) Draw a line of water all around the plate: In ancient time, people used to eat sitting on the ground. The water boundary around plate keeps ants and other such creatures away from food.

c) Keeping first bite aside: After lunch/dinner, they keep that first bite in some corner for birds. This practice keeps birds around home which creates a pleasant environment in the morning.

Hi VP, If North and West is not good then how come North West will be good. Wouldnt North East would be better. I have same dilemma, I have NW, NE, SW as an option. Which one I should choose to put my head towards.

Anonymous said...

I also have confusion, the south and north and also Eat and West comes in the corners and i have door on the south corner i can keep my bed in all other positions, please suggest which is best one.

Unknown said...

Don't be confused....... Everyone listen grab a compas. Now make a sacrifice to help yourself, the compas south direction is how to align your bed, no matter what!! Now lay your head to the south , good night.

Vipul Pathak said...

@William..... Thanks for your inputs :P

Sometimes it is really difficult to decide because sometimes it's not possible to align bed in that direction.. and so people look for second best alternative.

preethi said...

Hi
I used to sleep heading towards south. It was good.
Recently we bought new bed and changed the direction towards north.
It really gives you so much effect, couldn't sleep more than 6 hours, severe
Headaches, disturbed sleep, some health issue, bad dreams.
After 20 days I have noticed and today I have changed the direction to south.
So, guys never ever sleep heading towards north or west.
Always prefer East or South.

After reading this article I came to know few more things. Thanks for the information.

Hi Diane, I get the same problem as your husband does. I just find out last night When I couldn't sleep till I change my sleeping position. Today I search for the reason. Let me find out some more then let you know. But for sure my head shouldnt forward to South. My head needs toward to north and faces to south.

Anonymous said...

I was told that you should never sleep with your head to the east because that is the way that people are buried when they die.

Anonymous said...

This is cool info. In my last house I slept head to west and feet to east for 10 years, and now in my new place I sleep head to south and feet to north and I noticed that I sleep much better. Now that I read this article I see why.

Anonymous said...

If north direction is thought to be in parallel to the ground where will be the exact north (pole star) in Canada / North America? North will be in the sky approximately 45 degrees from the horizontal plane.
I have a different opinion about sleeping in the north direction. Human blood comprises of hemoglobin (indirectly iron) So if somebody sleeps regularly in the direction of north then the tiny iron particle in the blood can have a magnetic influence of earth and can cause problem.

Can we sleep right under the window which is facing south...one more question, can we sleep heading towards bathroom door?

nikhil said...

so should we point our head to the north of the magnet or the south of the magnet??

Vipul Pathak said...

Dear Hiran, a Vastu expert can answer this question better.

As far as I know, according to Hindu Mythology the south direction (Dakshina Dikku) is direction of Yamraaj(God of death) and is controlled by him. So it must not be good to sleep under a window facing south.

Regarding bathroom, quality of sleep also depends upon the quality of air we are inhaling. So just make sure that your bathroom is not passing bad air in your room.

Vipul Pathak said...

Dear Nikhil,

You can keep magnet in any direction so don't link directions to magnet's south pole and north pole.

You should sleep with your head towards south of earth. To know south, refer to compass.South is the direction where needle with mark 'S' is pointing.

I think the approach is wrong.

First of all, the point is we should sleep parallel to magnetic field of earth and with face towards south. and as far as I know magnetic field of earth is always parallel to earth's surface...

Your second point is also seems invalid because even if there is such influence then it will be there 24x7 whether we are standing, sitting or lying on bed.

The real reason is:
our body blood contains iron cells if we facing north side while sleeping the irons will attract by the north pole and move to our head and stay there if we do sleeping like this.u may have a questioned that these irons can also be attract by south pole also but IN INDIA we are close to the north pole we reside in northern side of equator region so the north side have larger attraction then the south pole if u r in the AUSTRALIA the u have to face ur head on north pole because the country is near south pole .In india we have to face our head to south so it will give long life..and another thing is our sleeping time is 8 hrs and we are active for 16 hrs (mostly standing) our heart will pump blood to head against the gravity force...so while sleep it will goes fast to head and facing our head north side all the irons will stay there in our head and makes slow dead...
this is the correct reason and it is scientifically proven...

I for one prefer to sleep with my head pointing North. After sleeping several years with head to south always woke tired and never relaxed. Living in Nebraska and also being Native I say this so called study is wrong In 17 years of married life my wife and I seldom argue when sleeping with heads to North while when sleeping with head to south we were always on edge and arguing over stupid things. Also I am much more mentally sharp and also eyesight has actually corrected back to normal since moving the bed so my head points North.

Koko said...

I stumbled upon this discovery after it forced itself upon me. I would always only feel normal (no headaches, amazing dreamless sleep) when my head pointed towards SE and toes NW. It was diagonal in relation to how my bed was set up and after years of finding myself waking up in this position without knowing when I had moved, I decided to google if there was some scientific reason behind it and hence I found this site and various others which recommend what I have been naturally experiencing. The divine plan is foolproof and its only when we start observing with the eye, that we start seeing how everything aligns with each other in a perfect way. Seek the truth in every particle and it will unravel itself. Stay blessed :-)

hey VP... as our Bed is facing SW corner and we don't have another option for relocation for bed or changing it ... so is it gud sleeping SW facing head direction

This post + all the comments/responses is one of the best on this topic on the internet. Thank you VP. But it does seem like many people are in the same situation as I am: the cardinal directions are in the corners of the room, so I wonder if you can post a response listing the order of best-to-worst sleeping position for NE, NW, SE, and SW? Any explanation would be much appreciated.

This is surprising that people are still not clarifying the actual directions and orientations of geographical poles, geomagnetic poles, and the (imaginary) bar magnet inside Earth's core. Please check figure on following website and then read the article keeping this in mind-

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Geomagnetic_pole#/media/File:Geomagnetisme.svg

I have nothing against proposing beneficial directions (as common knowledge) for sleeping or doing stuff but it would be nice if the author would CITE the actual scientific journal articles before claiming something to be scientifically proven. It would help skeptic minds like me to actually go and read the study and decide whether it has already been established as a (science) law or is still a theory!!

Having said it, I am myself experimenting with the directions of sleeping as permitted by actual constraints :)

Vipul Pathak said...

@Anonymous

Please elaborate so that all of us can understand your point.

Thanks for your participation.

Vipul Pathak said...

@deepalspatel Thanks for the appreciation.

Regarding your point... Going by the article, the lesser you rotate from north-south direction, the better so it should not matter whether you sleep SE-NW direction or SW-NE direction.

@coni's
Please check your floor. Is your floor perfectly horizontal? If it is not horizontal and your head is at lower level as compared to level of feet then you may not have sound sleep.

Note that article doesn't guarantees that you will have a sound sleep if you sleep with head towards south. It says you will have a better sleep as compared to sleeping in other directions..

@Hiran j You can sleep with your head towards South and near window.
Note that trees/plants release carbon dioxide in night. So if your window is too close to a very big tree then you may not have a very good sleep because of lack of proper oxygen.

I am an earth sign and for the past few months, I have been sleeping with my head facing South and my feet facing North. While sleeping in this direction may be auspicious for a majority of people, it has not been so for myself.
More and more frequently, I am experiencing extremely disturbed sleep ...awaken often and feel exhausted when I finally get up in the am. Recently, I have begun to experience terrible dreams almost nightly, and when I awaken from them, it is as if I am rising from deep underwater somewhere and breaking the surface of the water as I awaken. I have been feeling very drained and listless and my energy levels are quite low. :-(
My past experience has been that if I sleep with my head facing East and my feet facing West, I seem to sleep better.
I have never attempted to sleep with my head facing North but am tempted to try it to see if it might actually work for me, since the South-North direction doesn't appear to affect me in a favorable manner. Just wondering if anyone else has been experiencing similar symptoms when they are sleeping with their head facing South and their feet facing North... thank you for listening...

Vipul Pathak said...

Dear Anonymous,

The article doesn't guarantees a good sleep if you sleep with your head towards south. You will have a better sleep if you sleep with head towards south. However, point to note is that a good sleep will depend upon many factors your state of mind, surrounding environment, ventilation, quality of air, health are some of them. Please consider all the factors and share your experience. I would be more than happy to help you as much as I can

Initially i used to keep my head in north west direction and at that time I never felt anything like disturbed sleep or tiredness in my body. Last week i have changed my bed direction to SW and since then i wake up with a headache, body pan and even disturbed sleep as well. Starting of last week it was severe and now it is ok, but still not recovered. I cant even get up early to study which i used to do earlier with the NW direction. Please guide what is the best one. I request you just because of my posting dont suggest me to again change to earlier direction. I will be looking for some good suggestion which will help me. one more thing I am a water sign.

Hello,

I always had bad dreams, headaches, tiredness, and feeling my head heavy sometimes. My sleep was always heavy and full with dreams more often nightmares..
Its been one day since i changed my head position sleeping towards SSW direction. At the 1st night itself all the pressure feeling on my head is gone. I feel my head and body light. My sleep was good. I had no pain anything.

Do you think its a good direction to place the head?
